A new Asian alliance has emerged in the K-Pop market. The rookie boy group SEVENTOEIGHT officially debuted on the 28th with the release of their first single album.
At the debut showcase held in Mapo-gu, Seoul, SEVENTOEIGHT confidently declared their passion for K-Pop and their determination for global advancement. Composed of 5 members from Taiwan and 1 from Malaysia, their challenge carries a symbolic meaning that transcends mere debut, representing the unity of Asia under the cultural code of K-Pop.
The group name 'SEVENTOEIGHT' carries a deep philosophy. The members explained that it combines the number 7, symbolizing luck, and the number 8, representing infinity, to express their will to create infinite possibilities together with their fans. This goes beyond simple naming and offers a glimpse into their musical direction and philosophy.
The group shows a systematic position distribution centered around leader Chi-won. The 5 members from Taiwan possess solid fundamentals, including lead vocalist and lead dancer M, vocalist and rapper Jaeger, vocalist Kyo-jun, and the youngest member, lead dancer and lead rapper Diom. Adding to this is Malaysian dancer and vocalist Exy, completing their diverse charm.
Notably, their choice of role models is significant. The members cited BTS and Big Bang's G-Dragon as their role models, stating that they aim not just to imitate senior groups but to achieve the global impact they have shown. This is interpreted as presenting a clear vision of advancing to the global stage while actively participating in the home of K-Pop, Korea.
The members' confession that they have nurtured the dream of debuting in Korea since childhood while watching K-Pop starkly illustrates the cultural influence K-Pop has had across Asia. Particularly, the fact that members from the different cultural backgrounds of Taiwan and Malaysia share the same dream and challenge Korea is a testament to the strong centripetal force of K-Pop.
The debut album 'SEVENTOEIGHT' contains 2 tracks: the title song 'PDSR' and the included song 'DRIP & DROP'. Although the number of included songs is not large, it seems to be a strategic choice focused on completeness for a rookie group's first album. Industry attention is focused on what message and sound the uniquely titled track 'PDSR' will convey.
The members expressed their feelings, saying, 'We are so happy and can't believe that our long-awaited debut is happening today.' They added, 'We are very excited and nervous, but we will work hard to reach a bigger stage,' presenting 'delivering the members' energy on a larger global stage' as the team's ultimate goal.
Currently, the K-Pop market is accelerating globalization amid fierce competition among 4th generation idols. In this context, the emergence of SEVENTOEIGHT, composed of multinational members from Asia, is evaluated as a meaningful attempt to expand the base of K-Pop while presenting new possibilities. Attention is focused on what achievements they can make on the global stage following in the footsteps of senior groups.
