Two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington (70) and rapper A$AP Rocky confessed that the outcome of their rap battle in the film has been decided.
In Spike Lee's new film 'From Heaven to Hell', the scene where wealthy music executive David King (Washington) and rookie rapper Young Felon (Rocky) engage in a rap battle in a music studio has become a hot topic.
Impromptu Rap Battle Not in the Script
While the scene itself was scripted, Washington's impromptu rap, mixing lyrics from Nas, Tupac, DMX, and others, surprised even the professional rapper Rocky.
"How does this guy know Moneybagg Yo?" Rocky reportedly said in surprise. Washington laughed and replied, "But I'm 70 years old."
Pro Rapper Admits Defeat
Rocky honestly admitted his defeat. "I lost the rap battle to this guy. But I am a professional rapper," he confessed.
Washington humbly responded, "But I used other people's lyrics and practiced," but Rocky declared, "It doesn't matter. I lost. That's the reality of my job, and it's unfortunate."
Rapper Identity Hidden for 40 Years
In a recent interview, Washington proved that his love for hip-hop is genuine. He took out his phone and played a Nas track, showing off his rapping skills.
"I've been a closet rapper for 40 years. I finally got my chance," Washington said with a smile. He showcased his skills by rapping fluently to lyrics from various artists like DMX and OutKast.
Changing Background of the Music Industry
'From Heaven to Hell' is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 'High and Low' set in New York. Washington's character is a once-great music executive who is losing influence in an era where follower count has become more important.
Rocky's Reflection of Reality
Rocky said he sees himself in his character Young Felon. Recently acquitted in a gun-related trial, Rocky is facing a turning point in his life.
"Kids no longer want to be rappers. They want to be streamers," Rocky diagnosed the changing times.
Music Industry in the Age of AI
Rocky warned that artificial intelligence is taking over the music industry. "There are number one songs that aren't actually sung by the person," he emphasized the need for AI regulation.
Washington pointed out the limitations of AI, saying, "People trying to imitate me don't sound like me."
The film is distributed by A24 and will be released in theaters on Friday, followed by a release on Apple TV+ two weeks later.
