Legendary Japanese singer Go Hiromi appeared as a guest on Fuji TV's 'Nonstop!' on November 24, reminiscing about the explosive idol popularity at his debut at the age of 16. Now at 70 years old, Go Hiromi showcased his status as the longest-active idol singer with 53 years in the industry.
An Idol Who Couldn't Get Off the Shinkansen
Go Hiromi stated that the enthusiastic reactions from fans in the 1970s were incomparable to those of today, saying, "I couldn't get off at Nagoya Station on the Shinkansen. There seemed to be a policy that 'Go Hiromi does not get off'."
He shared an anecdote about how he couldn't get off at his destination, Nagoya Station, due to safety issues and had to get off at Toyohashi Station, one stop before, and then travel by car, highlighting the immense popularity he experienced at that time.
Even more astonishing things happened on stage. Go Hiromi recounted, "A Louis Vuitton bag flew onto the stage. It had a ribbon attached," sharing an episode that showcased the passionate enthusiasm and wealth of his fans at the time. This indicates the level of love from fans was so great that they would throw luxury brand bags onto the stage.
53 Years Since Debut, Still 'Ongoing' at 70
Since debuting in 1972 with 'Boys and Girls', Go Hiromi has led the Japanese pop music scene with numerous hit songs such as 'Premonition of Parting', '240 Million Pupils', and 'GOLDFINGER'99'.
In 2025, he will hold a nationwide tour to celebrate his 70th anniversary of debut, 'Hiromi Go Concert Tour 2025 "70 YEARS a GO!"', and successfully completed a birthday concert at the Budokan last October. His legend, captivating fans with energy that transcends age and unwavering vocal ability, is still ongoing.
