The highest honor of the 76th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), the Golden Bear, was awarded to the work 〈Yellow Letters〉 by Turkish-German director Ilker Catak.

The jury of the competition section of the Berlin Film Festival held an award ceremony on the evening of the 21st (local time) at the Berlinale Palast in Berlin, Germany, announcing the winners of a total of eight categories, including the Golden Bear.
〈Yellow Letters〉 tells the story of an artist couple who lose their home due to state power and face a family disintegration crisis amid the conflict between survival and belief in Istanbul, and it was produced in Turkish.
According to Reuters, Director Catak, in his acceptance speech, strongly criticized, saying, "The real threat is not among us, but over there with the dictators," and added, "The nihilists of our time are seizing power and destroying our lives." He emphasized, "Let’s not fight each other. Let’s fight them," drawing attention in the hall.
It has been reported by DPA that it is the first time in 22 years that a German director has won the Golden Bear since director Fatih Akin's 〈Head-On〉 in 2004.
Looking at the results of the awards by category, the Silver Bear Jury Prize was awarded to Turkish director Emin Alper for 〈Salvation〉, a work depicting the religious beliefs and power conflicts in a Turkish mountain village. The Silver Bear Jury Award went to American director Lance Hammer for 〈Queen at Sea〉, which tells the story of an Alzheimer’s patient and their family.

The Silver Bear for Best Director was awarded to British director Grant Gee for 〈Everyone Digs Bill Evans〉, and the Silver Bear for Best Actress went to Zandra Wheeler for 〈Rose〉. Wheeler had previously won the same award in 2006. The Silver Bear for Best Supporting Actor was jointly awarded to Anna Calder-Marshall and Tom Courtenay (both from the UK) for 〈Queen at Sea〉.
The Silver Bear for Best Screenplay was awarded to Canadian director Geneviève Dulude-De Celles for 〈Nina Roza〉, and the Silver Bear for Artistic Contribution was awarded to the American documentary 〈Yo: Love Is a Rebellious Bird〉 (Anna Peach, Banker White).

Meanwhile, this film festival has been surrounded by controversy regarding the political expression freedom of artists from the opening to the closing. Director Wim Wenders, who served as the jury chair, faced fierce criticism from the film industry after stating at a press conference on the 12th during the opening ceremony regarding questions about the war in Gaza, "We cannot enter the political arena."
Throughout the festival, many filmmakers raised their political voices, urging international attention to the sacrifices of Palestinians, and the award ceremony was no exception.
Director Alper, who won the Jury Prize, mentioned in his speech the solidarity with political prisoners in Turkey, stating, "The Iranian people suffering under dictatorship, and the Palestinians in Gaza living and dying in the most horrific conditions," as reported by AFP.
