‘Gunfire in August 1974’ Returns to the Screen With a Hidden Side of History—and Praise on a Global Stage

One of the most shocking mysteries in modern South Korean history comes to the global stage to reveal the truth first. The much-anticipated film ‘Assassins (or 'Killers')’, starring Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il, and Lee Min-ho, has landed an official invitation to the gala presentation section at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), a North America-wide phenomenon—an achievement that signals the film’s expected standout synergy. Production company Hive Media Corp. announced the news on the 8th, formally signaling the arrival of a top-tier historical drama onto the global market.

The Toronto International Film Festival—ranked alongside Cannes, Venice, and Berlin—has been seen as a crucial steppingstone for entering the North American market. In particular, the gala presentation that ‘Assassins (or 'Killers')’ has entered is the festival’s main stage, where only films that satisfy both blockbuster appeal that overwhelms audiences and meticulous craft are allowed.

With this latest announcement, director Heo Jin-ho is taking his third turn on Toronto’s red carpet, following ‘Dangerous Relationships’ (2012) and ‘A Normal Family’ (2023). TIFF executive director Cameron Bailey said, “Director Heo Jin-ho has woven Korea’s shocking historical tragedy into a dynamic tension,” adding, “A fantastic acting ensemble created by a lineup of master performers takes over the screen.”

The film’s foundation is the August 15, 1974 assassination of the first lady. By projecting sharp cinematic imagination beyond a fragmentary historical record, the movie reconstructs the truth of that day—trapped in thick fog—into a suspense that feels almost unbearable.

The acting showdown among the three lead actors is the biggest draw. Yoo Hae-jin anchors the story as detective Cheol-gu, who relentlessly traces the reality behind a concealed case. In response, Park Hae-il takes on the role of Jae-hwan, a social affairs editor at a newspaper with sharp insight, while Lee Min-ho plays Yeong-il, an eager rookie reporter who throws himself toward the truth—completing an airtight triangle ensemble.

Now in the spotlight of critics and the media worldwide, Assassins (or 'Killers') will make its debut through the Toronto International Film Festival World Premiere, which opens on September 10. After that, riding the same wave of intense global attention, the film is expected to make its official landing in domestic theaters during the upcoming Chuseok holiday break, delivering a heavy sense of catharsis to audiences.
