[Kim Ji-yeon’s Jewel Box] 'Off to Work Again!' Star Kang Ki-dong, the Sturdy Pillar of Korean Dramas

Anyone who watches Korean dramas has likely noticed Kang Ki-dong at least once — the reliably grounded actor whose supporting turns keep stealing scenes. In the tvN drama 〈Off to Work Again!〉, which concluded on the 28th, Kang played Jeon Gi-tae, a seven-year office veteran and a member of Saeum Electronics’ Product Planning Team 2 who balances his job with raising two sons. His performance injected energy into the series. He delivered a hyperrealistic performance that will resonate with Korean office workers and dual-income couples, capturing everything from the warmly human presence of a nosy, well-meaning busybody to bickering, peer-level chemistry with Park Ji-hyun. That range became a cheat code that made the show binge-worthy.

Kang showed a different side in the Netflix series 〈Wonderfuls〉, released in May. The series drew much of its humor from the contrast between flashy spectacle and modest everyday lives. Ordinary residents of Haeseong City — including Chaeni (Park Eun-bin), Kyung-hoon (Choi Dae-hoon) and Robin (Lim Seong-jae) — are enlisted in a bittersweetly funny struggle for survival that adds a sharp edge to the story despite its superhero trappings. Kang’s Yang Seok-woo, a civil servant at Haeseong City Hall, was no exception. Faced with the chronically troublesome Kyung-hoon, Yang would mutter, "My stomach hurts," hand the task to his junior Un-jeong (Cha Eun-woo) and casually walk off — a brazenly believable flourish that drew laughs. Surrounded by superpowers, Kang captured the annoyingly human side of a government employee while keeping the character likable.

In fact, Kang Ki-dong has long been a steady pillar of the theater and musical scene. He graduated at the top of his class from the Acting Department at the Korea National University of Arts’ School of Drama and has been a veteran more at home on stage than on screen, appearing continuously in productions such as The Goddess Is Watching, Understudy and Jekyll & Hyde. Notably, in the acclaimed original musical Showman: The Fourth Understudy of a Dictator, he starred as the lead, Nebula, across three seasons — from the 2022 premiere through the third run in 2025. Kang transformed onstage from a nine-year-old child to a young man who becomes a dictator’s stand-in, to a man in his 70s, drawing the audience wholly into the story. Beyond performing, Kang has a deep attachment to theater and has actively broadened his role offstage. He founded the theatrical production company Dudung Project, serving as producer, director and actor. Through Dudung Project, he presented the play My Dear Anger in 2024 and opened the play Ilho Tunnel last July, which is currently running — solidifying his role as a multidisciplinary artist who directs, produces and acts.

Kang began seriously moving into screen acting with the 2016 drama 〈Love in the Moonlight〉 and the 2017 tvN series 〈Tomorrow With You〉. He earned the public’s strong trust by serving as indispensable comic relief and a scene-stealer in dramas such as 〈Fight My Way〉, 〈It’s Okay to Not Be Okay〉 and 〈Good Woman Bu-semi〉. Among those, the role that likely imprinted his face most firmly on the public was 〈Prison Playbook〉. In that series, he played a prison guard known as "Song Dam-dang," building a talkative, affectionate character that helped convey the show’s humane tone. He also showcased his comic acting chops as Byeong-jo in the 2024 film 〈Handsome Guys〉. From being treated like a pushover and carrying resentment and sorrow to literally turning to the dark side, 〈Handsome Guys〉 underscored Kang Ki-dong’s acting depth.

Kang Ki-dong continues to build his craft freely across dramas and films, stage and screen, plays and musicals. If he were a stock, he might be a large, blue-chip company with solid fundamentals.
