Return of a master and a reinterpretation of myth, the 'Odyssey' syndrome that swallowed the theater scene

The ambitious new work of veteran director 'Christopher Nolan', 'Odyssey', grabbed 1.33 million viewers over its opening weekend, pushing cumulative attendance to more than 2 million in one fell swoop. According to data from the Integrated Ticketing Network for movie theater admissions released on the 10th, the film drew roughly 1.333 million people from the 7th to the 9th (sales share 45.1%), taking the top spot on the domestic weekend box office chart. As of 6 a.m. on the 10th, six days after release, it crossed the 2 million mark, proving its overwhelming box office force.

Bringing Homer's immortal epic to the big screen, the film tightly charts the difficult journey of Ithaca's king 'Odysseus' (played by 'Matt Damon') as he returns home after the end of the Trojan War. Critics and audiences are praising the film's dreamlike mise-en-scène crafted by gods, giants and fairies, as well as the finely tuned ensemble effect created by depictions of ancient city-states before and after the Trojan War.

Just short of 6 million, 'Spider-Man' and its chasers keep surging without wavering

The Marvel flagship franchise led by 'Tom Holland' is keeping its momentum too, in 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'. Over the weekend, it pulled in about 1.264 million people (sales share 40.4%), holding firmly to No. 2 on the box office chart. After setting a new golden milestone of surpassing 5 million viewers in the shortest time this year, it currently stands at about 5.911 million cumulative viewers, putting it within sight of crossing 6 million.

Taking the next spot, the pride of homegrown animation, 'Love Hatchling: The Legend of the Whale Gem', settled into third place with about 433,000 viewers, while 'Hope', a new intense work directed by 'Na Hong-jin', drew about 100,000 people to rank fourth.

Advance booking indicators for the theater market signal that, for the time being, 'Odyssey' will run solo. As of 9 a.m. on the 10th, the film recorded a 63.4% advance booking rate and secured a waiting audience of as many as 600,000 people. It is racing ahead with a wide gap over No. 2 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' (21.5%) and No. 3 'Okay Madame 2' (starring 'Uhm Jung-hwa'; 3.6%), carving out a standout run.
