An unprecedented ticket war as a master filmmaker’s return takes over theaters

Director Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece The Odyssey is generating a box-office surge that has not cooled even in its fourth week of release, bringing it within reach of 7 million cumulative admissions. Traffic surged as soon as tickets went on sale, even causing an unprecedented disruption that delayed access to the CGV app and underscoring the public’s intense appetite for the film.

According to data from the Korea Film Council’s integrated ticketing network on the 21st, The Odyssey drew more than 188,000 moviegoers the previous day and recorded a 63.2% share of revenue, firmly holding the top spot at the domestic box office. Since its release on the 5th, the film has drawn more than 6.788 million viewers.

In particular, crowds rushed to secure tickets when the fourth week of screenings opened the previous day, briefly overwhelming the ticketing system. As of 9 a.m. that day, The Odyssey had a 72.5% presale rate, an overwhelming figure that showed more than 753,000 people waiting to see the film.

An adaptation of Homer’s classic The Odyssey, the film follows the perilous journey home of Odysseus (Matt Damon), the hero of the Trojan War. It is the first film in cinema history to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Despite its mythological setting, the film has earned critical acclaim worldwide for its realistic aesthetic, which minimizes the use of computer-generated imagery (CG).

Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, now in an extended theatrical run, drew more than 55,000 viewers the previous day for a cumulative total of more than 7.74 million, making it likely to surpass 8 million admissions this coming weekend. The newly released horror film Insidious: They Came Over ranked third with more than 22,000 admissions, followed by the animated film Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway in fourth with more than 9,000.
