In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the passing of the renowned Korean filmmaker Lee Man-hee, a special retrospective exhibition honoring his cinematic world will be held. The Korean Film Archive (KOFA) announced that the "Timeless Film Artist, Lee Man-hee 50th Anniversary Exhibition" will take place from September 4 to 13 at the Cinematheque KOFA in Mapo-gu, Seoul. This retrospective is expected to be a meaningful occasion to honor the director's achievements and to shed new light on his body of work.
This exhibition will provide an opportunity to revisit Lee Man-hee's representative works on the big screen. In particular, '04:00 -1950-' and 'The Soldier Without a Serial Number' will be screened for the first time in 4K restored versions, allowing for a clearer and more vivid viewing experience. Additionally, 'The Assassin' and 'Midnight' will be specially screened in 35mm film, prepared to allow audiences to feel the texture of the films as they were at the time, as reported by the Korean Film Archive.
On the opening day of the exhibition, September 4, a discussion with screenwriter Baek Gyeol, who has worked closely with Director Lee Man-hee for a long time, is scheduled. Furthermore, Lee Hye-young, the youngest daughter of the director and an active actress, will conduct a reading event about her father. On September 6, a cine-talk featuring directors Kim Ji-woon and Oh Seung-wook will take place, planning to discuss the artistic world of Director Lee Man-hee and its historical significance in Korean cinema in depth.
