Netflix 'Physical: Asia' Uses 'Shinchi' for Kimchi in Chinese Subtitles, Sparking Controversy

The global OTT platform Netflix is gaining attention for correctly labeling kimchi in its Chinese subtitles.

Professor Seo Kyung-duk from Sungshin Women's University stated on the 27th, "In episode 12 of Netflix's popular show 〈Physical: Asia〉, kimchi was labeled as 'Shinchi' (辛奇) in the Chinese subtitles." He explained, "This is the first time Netflix has reflected the correct labeling after being criticized for incorrectly translating kimchi as 'Paochai' (泡菜), which refers to Chinese pickled vegetables, in various works."

In 2021, the Korean government revised the 'Guidelines for Foreign Language Translation and Notation of Public Terms' and officially specified 'Shinchi' (辛奇) as the correct Chinese term for kimchi. This was a measure to distinguish kimchi from general Chinese pickled vegetables.

However, in China, the so-called 'Kimchi Fairness' continues to distort the origin of kimchi as 'Paochai', and there have been ongoing criticisms that the incorrect translations by global OTT platforms bolster this narrative.

Professor Seo remarked, "The application of 'Shinchi' by Netflix is very welcome," adding, "As a global platform reflects the official standard of the Korean government, it will greatly help rectify the confusion surrounding the identity of kimchi."

He further emphasized, "Netflix's influence spans the globe," stating, "This change in labeling is a symbolic measure that weakens the unfounded claims of some in China and serves as an opportunity to spread the correct standard in the international community."
