Global rapper and producer Kanye West (stage name Ye) has officially apologized for his past anti-Semitic remarks and controversial actions, including the use of Nazi symbols. In a full-page advertisement published in the prominent daily newspaper Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 26th (local time), he acknowledged his mistakes and bowed his head.
Confession of Bipolar Disorder and Aftermath of a 25-Year-Old Accident
In a letter titled ‘To those I've Hurt,’ Ye mentioned health issues as the cause of his inappropriate behavior. He revealed that he suffered a jaw fracture and damage to the right frontal lobe due to a serious car accident 25 years ago, explaining that the delay in neurological diagnosis ultimately led to a diagnosis of ‘Bipolar Disorder Type 1.’
He shared, “When I fall into a manic state, I do not realize that I am ill and think that those around me are overly sensitive,” adding, “I engaged in deeply regrettable actions while being detached from reality at that time.” He particularly expressed profound remorse, stating, “I cannot even remember the moments when I made reckless decisions, such as producing T-shirts with the most destructive symbol, the Nazi emblem.”
“I Love Jewish People”… Apology to the Black Community and His Wife
In this apology, Ye emphasized, “I am neither a Nazi nor an anti-Semite. I genuinely love Jewish people.” He also expressed affection towards his roots in the Black community, saying, “I am sorry for disappointing you, the foundation that has supported me.”
He revealed that his life was destroyed and he felt suicidal due to a severe manic episode that lasted four months last year, but he has now found stability through medication, counseling, and exercise at the encouragement of his wife. He added, “I am now focusing on positive art and ideas that help the world,” and expressed a desire for sincere forgiveness and patience, not sympathy or absolution.
ADL “Meaningful Steps”… Must Prove Sincerity Through Actions
Regarding Ye's apology, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) stated, “It is a somewhat late but meaningful apology,” while also asserting that “the actions he shows in the future will prove his sincerity.”
Previously, Ye faced significant economic losses of over $2 billion (approximately 2.6 trillion won) after major partners such as Adidas, Gap, and Balenciaga terminated contracts due to the fallout from his anti-Semitic remarks. The world is watching to see if this official apology will be a turning point in restoring his tarnished reputation and business relationships.
