Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival’s two-time winners’ buzzworthy release 〈Gyo-Saeng Practice〉 hits theaters on May 13. 〈Gyo-Saeng Practice〉 is a high-school horror-comedy film starring the hot-blooded MZ student teacher “Eun-kyung” (Han Sun-hwa), who must take a mock exam of death to fight off the CSAT ghosts, along with girls from a black magic club. It’s the new work from director Kim Min-ha, who also directed 〈AmEba Girls and School Ghost Stories: School Opening Day〉. After watching the film, Cineplay reporter Ji-yeon Kim shares her review.
Ji-yeon Kim / ★★★ / I hope this series’ streak never ends
The trend is horror-comedy (horror + comedy), not romance-comedy. Compared to the previous film, 〈AmEba Girls and School Ghost Stories: School Opening Day〉, the ghost makeup has become more realistic, and the set design is more dazzling—so the “raw” fun has been reduced a bit. Still, the “good-natured bad taste” humor is very much intact. The director’s interests—students and caring about education—are consistent, but in this installment, the sense that the message comes slightly more to the front than the comedy is noticeable. Even so, it’s a K–high-teen movie that wipes away tears with laughter, delivering to our students and teachers the idea that if it’s for grades, “even youth is put on the line.”
