Major Hollywood studio Warner Bros. has made a sweeping adjustment to the release schedules of its upcoming highly anticipated titles. As the schedule for the new sci-fi fantasy from acclaimed director J.J. Abrams moves, the timing of the launch for major lineups—led by “The Batman Part 2,” which has been drawing strong interest from superhero fans—has been rearranged in sequence, triggering major shifts on the theatrical distribution front.

■ J.J. Abrams’ “The Great Beyond” Moves for the Best IMAX Format
The starting point for this lineup reshuffle is the schedule change for the original sci-fi fantasy epic “The Great Beyond,” a project that has caught attention with J.J. Abrams—who led the “Star Wars” series—as both writer and director, and with Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega starring.
Originally set for a Nov. 13, 2026 release, the film has been moved to Oct. 1, 2027. Warner Bros. made the decision after a recent secret test screening at the Irvine Regal theater to add additional 70mm IMAX(IMAX) print production in a bid to maximize the film’s visual scale. Abrams, meanwhile, is currently in the final stretch of post-production at the editing studio, and the schedule shift gives the production enough time to raise the finish level of the visual effects. Early October is also a traditional prime-time window where Warner Bros. has rolled out major megahits such as “Gravity,” “Joker,” and “Dune.”
■ “The Batman 2,” Knocked Off Schedule by the Reshuffle, Finally Lands in February 2028
With “The Great Beyond” seizing the October 2027 slot, Matt Reeves’ next film “The Batman Part II,” which had been holding the date, naturally moved to Feb. 18, 2028.
“The Batman Part II,” whose production was delayed by about five months, plans to use this opportunity as a springboard to secure a more generous post-production period and push the quality to the extreme. The revised release date falls within the four-day holiday stretch of the U.S. major holiday “Presidents Day,” a prime superhero window where films have previously posted record box office performances, including “Black Panther.”
The film, drawing attention with the addition of Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan alongside the original cast members including Robert Pattinson (Batman), Andy Serkis (Alfred), and Colin Farrell (Penguin), is still expected to meet audiences with IMAX screens even after the delayed schedule.
■ Paramount-Warner Merger Lawsuit Hits Turbulence, Making a Scheduling War Inevitable
The large-scale reshuffling of release dates comes as Warner Bros. and Paramount’s massive merger battle has been stalled and drifting amid antitrust lawsuits filed by judicial authorities in 12 U.S. states including New York and California, drawing extra attention from inside the industry.
As the merger and acquisition that had initially been expected to be completed in fall 2026 was delayed, the two would-be partner companies suddenly found they could not avoid an intense all-out war on the theatrical schedule. In fact, on the weekend of Feb. 26, 2027 — when “Yorona’s Revenge” moved—Paramount’s “K-Pop: The Debut” is holding the line, and on April 9, when “Panic Carefully” was chosen, Paramount’s R-rated comedy “Boys for Life” is waiting just a day behind, setting up a bruising box office race.
