An ensemble featuring Kim Min-ha, Joo Jong-hyuk, Han Sun-hwa, Chang Ryul, Shim Eun-kyung, Lee Hee-jun, Jeon So-young and Kim Dong-hwi! 〈The Table: Day and Night〉 opens November 4. The film captures the daytime and nighttime conversations of people who pass through a café over the course of a season. Cineplay editor-in-chief Joo Sung-chul shares his impressions after seeing it at a press screening.
Joo Sung-chul / ★★★ / How much can a camera truly capture of memories and scents, and of the distinct hours of day and night?
By the final scene, Kim Jong-kwan’s short-film debut, 〈How to Operate a Polaroid Camera〉 (2004), the work that brought him to attention, suddenly comes to mind. From memories and scents that would otherwise simply slip away to feelings of conflict and catharsis, and even the different hours of day and night, the film persistently captures intimate, analog moments at tables throughout the café, as if using a Polaroid camera—almost like an experimental film.
