MTV reality show 'The Hills' star Spencer Pratt (42) has thrown his hat in the ring for the Los Angeles (LA) mayoral position. As a victim who lost his home in last year's massive wildfire, he aims to hold the current government accountable for its incompetence.
According to local media on the 8th (local time), Pratt officially announced his candidacy for the LA mayoral election at the 'They Let Us Burn' rally held in Pacific Palisades on the 7th, the one-year anniversary of the wildfire.
◆ "This was a preventable tragedy"
Pratt lost his home and all his possessions along with his wife Heidi Montag due to the wildfire that struck Pacific Palisades on January 7, 2025. He recalled during his speech, "The worst day of my life, decades of memories in the walls disappeared," and raised his voice, stating, "The most heartbreaking thing is that all of this was preventable."
Pratt claimed that California has neglected the brush management in Topanga State Park for 50 years, creating a 'powder keg', and that the water supply system of the Department of Water and Power (DWP) failed during the fire, exacerbating the damage. He declared, "The system in LA is not just struggling; it is fundamentally broken," and vowed to "sanitize this city, which is dominated by NGOs and unions, with our light."

◆ Current Mayor's Camp: "Just a publicity stunt"
The camp of current Mayor Karen Bass, who is running for re-election, immediately countered Pratt's candidacy, labeling it as 'noise marketing'. Bass camp spokesperson Douglas Herman stated, "The 'reality TV villain' who staged a fake divorce for ratings in the past is using the mayoral election to promote his upcoming book," and harshly criticized him as "someone who spreads misinformation about disasters to increase his social media following."
◆ June primary election, a fierce battle expected
Currently, there are a total of 21 registered mayoral candidates with the LA Ethics Commission, including Pratt. Former LA school superintendent Austin Beutner and community organizer Ray Huang are also running against Mayor Bass. Spencer Pratt, along with his wife Heidi Montag, is gathering residents to file a class-action lawsuit against the city and the water department, which is expected to be a key driving force in his campaign.
Voter judgment will be cast in the primary election on June 2, 2026. If no candidate receives a majority of the votes, the top two candidates will face off in the final election in November.
