The evolution of 'Under Dog,' back as 'Moungchi on the Road' in 4K… Narrative density created by a 9-minute cut

A masterpiece that opened a new chapter for South Korean animation in 2019 returns to the big screen with a completely new texture. The star of the show is 'Moungchi on the Road', delivered in breathtaking 4K resolution and refined through meticulous re-editing.

Production company Odolttoki said it will open 'Moungchi on the Road' exclusively through Lotte Cinema on the 19th. The original film 'Under Dog', co-directed by Oh Sung-yoon and Lee Chun-baek, maximized visual completion through this remastering. The most notable change is the runtime. It boldly trims the previous 102-minute screening time down to '93 minutes', cutting away narrative excess and sharpening the weighty message the film carries.

The story follows 'Moungchi', a dog that is cast aside as a stray overnight, as it forms an alliance with stray dogs roaming the streets and sets out in pursuit of true freedom. Through vivid depictions of lives discarded out of human selfishness, it underscores the value of love, friendship, and a painful coexistence.

The voice acting lineup and details have also been made even more precise. With 'Kyung-soo Do' (as Moungchi) at the forefront, the dubbing by top-tier actors such as 'So-dam Park' (as Bami), 'Chul-min Park' (as Zzang-a), and 'Jun-hyeok Lee' (as the hunter) was carefully enhanced to maximize the delivery of lines and the emotional arc. Director Oh Sung-yoon—who rewrote South Korea’s animation box-office history when 'A Hen That Came Out to the Yard' drew 2 million viewers in 2011—shines again with his trademark meticulous direction.

The production company said, "We remade it anew to re-imprint the unrivaled level of completion of a homegrown original animated creation onto the public," emphasizing the rationale for the re-release. It’s an ideal opportunity to reaffirm the true worth of a well-made animation on the screen.
