The meeting of the noble and the lowly in a class society always piques interest. It can be a comedy, a human drama, or a poignant tragedy. 〈The King's Warden〉 strives to capture the infinite possibilities that can arise from that relationship. Set to be released on February 4, 〈The King's Warden〉 depicts the meeting of a village chief who has chosen exile and the deposed king, Danjong. This film, which has garnered attention for the pairing of Yoo Hae-jin and Park Ji-hoon, was previewed at a press screening held on January 20 at the Megabox COEX in Gangnam, Seoul. Let's take a look at what kind of work 〈The King's Warden〉 is.

The village chief, Eom Heung-do, from the valley of Gwangcheon-gol hears a piece of news from a neighboring valley. Since a certain noble was designated as an exile, wealth has been flowing into the village, and things have been going smoothly. In response, Eom Heung-do volunteers to make Gwangcheon-gol's Cheongnyeongpo the new place of exile. However, the person coming into exile this time is the young king, 'Nosan-gun' Lee Hong-wi, who has been deposed. Eom Heung-do, who dreams of revival by volunteering for exile, is disappointed but gradually grows closer to Lee Hong-wi while staying by his side.

Based on the historical figure 'Eom Heung-do,' whose name appears only a few times in actual records, 〈The King's Warden〉 unfolds the story of Danjong and his hidden loyalist, Eom Heung-do. Directed by Jang Hang-jun, the film combines comedy and drama in a humanistic story, as expected from the pairing of Yoo Hae-jin and Park Ji-hoon. However, the emotional range is much greater than anticipated, leaving a more significant impact than expected. 〈The King's Warden〉 depicts the most human side of a character born of extraordinary lineage, a 'king,' who is not taken lightly by anyone, extending the historical context to issues relevant to our reality. At the same time, it captures both the human Lee Hong-wi and the royal Nosan-gun as one character, without missing the 'king' in the midst of a historical upheaval. By placing the ordinary yet powerful character Eom Heung-do alongside, it successfully captures the strengths of human comedy.

The chemistry of the actors is the greatest strength in leading 〈The King's Warden〉 toward this direction. Yoo Hae-jin, who now brings more anticipation than doubt to any role he takes, infuses even somewhat excessive comedy into his character, driving the energy in the early stages. This work showcases a 'table setting' as famous as Yoo Hae-jin's well-known whale portrayal, delivering his unique comedic charm. His comic performance alongside special guest Park Ji-hwan is also excellent. In contrast, Park Ji-hoon's presence is significant in the latter half, capturing Lee Hong-wi's extensive transformation from a guilt-ridden human to a decisive king. Park Ji-hoon, who has already shown an 'irresistible gaze' in various works, perfectly combines the sympathy of a boy with the dignity of a king born of a leader's lineage. Yoo Ji-tae, who portrays the steadfast Han Myung-hoe in a style never seen before, Jeon Mi-do as Myunghwa, another loyalist who consistently protects Lee Hong-wi, and Kim Min as Taesan, who embodies the limitations imposed on commoners by environment and lineage, all operate perfectly in their roles, making 〈The King's Warden〉 flow smoothly.

However, there are some shortcomings, as certain overly ambitious aspects stand out. In short, scenes constructed to 'show more' as a commercial film somewhat disrupt the flow of the movie. Comedies that could have been given a moment of relaxation sometimes take a step further, or scenes inserted to showcase scale are consumed without any particular utility. While not a fatal flaw, it is disappointing that an overall smoothly crafted story seems to lose its weight. Additionally, there are certainly objects that are repeatedly depicted, but their intuitive impact is lacking.

Set to be released on February 4, 〈The King's Warden〉 has timed its release to coincide with the Lunar New Year holiday. After watching the film, I was convinced that it was indeed worth targeting the holiday season. The ensemble of the actors, the story combining comedy and human drama, and the exploration of the qualities of a great leader and their followers, though not overtly displayed, all contribute to the film. 〈The King's Warden〉 is a film that anyone can enjoy and feel a reasonable level of satisfaction with.
